Funeral honors firefighter killed in Md. flashover

Mark Falkenhan, 43, of the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company, was killed while searching for possible trapped victims

BALTIMORE — Mourners gathered Monday morning at a funeral for a firefighter killed in an apartment fire last Wednesday.

Firefighter Mark Falkenhan of the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County died in a flashover while searching for possible remaining victims at the four-alarm fire.

More than 400 fire and emergency vehicles took part in the procession, accompanying a white antique fire truck that transported Firefighter Falkenhan’s body, according to WMAR.

“This well-rounded and exemplary individual leaves a tremendous legacy,” retired Captain Richard Brooks told mourners gathered in the cathedral.
“My brothers and sisters, carry the legacy of Mark Falkenhan in your heart.”

A longtime firefighter and paramedic with the county, Firefighter Falkenhan retired from the department in 2006 but continued serve as a volunteer firefighter.

Firefighter Falkenhan leaves behind a wife and two young sons.
