Genetics played a role despite healthy lifestyle

Steve Warren sits at his home weight room Thursday in front of a mural he painted in 2004. Warren, a fitness fanatic and Hall County firefighter, is recovering from a major heart attack and quintuple bypass surgery. The mural depicting Samson reads from Judges 16:25: “And they said, bring us Samson, so he can entertain us.”
Hall County firefighter Steve Warren was the picture of health. A 41-year-old competitive weightlifter, he exercised regularly, didn’t smoke and followed a strict diet.
Yet on Jan. 11, the married father of two suffered a major heart attack. Less than 24 hours later, he was undergoing quintuple bypass surgery at Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s Ronnie Green Heart Center.
“This has shocked everybody,” Warren said Tuesday as he recuperated at home. “I’m one of the fittest people in the (fire) department. I count calories. I almost never eat the food they cook at the firehouse.”
