DALLAS, Texas — Firefighters rescued a homeless man who was trapped in the back of a garbage truck Monday morning.
Suingenser Roosevelt, 74, had been resting in a dumpster when it was tipped into the truck.
The truck’s driver and witnesses on the street were alerted to Roosevelt’s plight when they heard screams coming from the back of the truck after the trash compactor machines were turned on, according to WFAA.
The driver quickly turned off the crushing mechanism and tried to pull Suingenser Roosevelt out, but without success.
Firefighters were called, who used various tools to bring Roosevelt to safety.
“The way he was hung inside the trash, we couldn’t get him out; we had to dig him out,” Dallas Fire-Rescue Chief Roy Ferguson told The Dallas Morning News.
“Because he was injured so badly, we had to raise him up with a Stokes basket and get him up to where we could get him out and get him on the ambulance.”
Roosevelt was taken to the local hospital with serious hip and shoulder injury.
