Lackawanna, NY — Hundreds of firefighters from across the United States and Canada joined the family and friends of Don Herbert, who died from pneumonia earlier in the week.
Herbert was a city firefighter when a roof collapsed on him in 1995. He remained in a coma for almost a decade, until he suddenly started speaking with family and friends last year. His breakthrough was attributed to a drug cocktail and prayers, and was hailed around the world as a miracle.
But continuing progress was elusive, and Herbert died in a local nursing home early Tuesday morning.
