Hundreds mourn fallen Maine firefighter

HARTLAND, Maine — At least 500 people turned out in Hartland to pay last respects to a 49-year-old volunteer firefighter who died last week of an apparent heart attack while battling a house fire in the nearby town of Detroit.

An overflow crowd of mourners, including firefighters from around the state, filled the sanctuary and the gymnasium at the First Baptist Church on Saturday for the memorial service for Michael Snowman.

A close friend, Maine State Police Sgt. Mark Brooks, said Snowman responded to three separate fire calls in the final 14 hours of his life. Brooks said Snowman “went out of this world doing exactly what he wanted to do, going out as a Hartland firefighter.”
