AUSTIN, Texas — A firefighter trapped in the debris of a collapsed building lived to tell the tale to KXAN. This was the scene Saturday morning as the flames engulfed a nightclub called The Taste on Fifth near Trinity.
Chopper 36 was over the scene as the fire spread into three other buildings. One person was rescued and a firefighter injured. For the first time, that firefighter got to see exclusive KXAN video of his close call, and he shared his story.
“I heard the firefighter down call. It was real, most surreal. It’s almost an out-of-body experience listening to that and thinking, ‘Oh firefighter down! Oh shoot, that’s me,’” Chris Youngblood with the Austin Fire Department said.
