CHICAGO — Faulty wiring caused a fire that prompted hundreds of workers to evacuate a 45-story office tower, fire officials said Thursday.
The rooftop fire sent workers into the street as firefighters rushed inside around lunchtime Wednesday. Investigators traced the cause to electrical wiring that ignited insulation in an air conditioning heating unit, fire department spokeswoman Eve Rodriguez said.
The fire was limited to the exterior of the building and never threatened the safety of those inside, fire officials said. Two people were hospitalized for exhaustion after evacuating.
