BILLINGS, Mont. - A judge has ordered the city to pay a group of current and former firefighters more than $3.2 million in back pay and penalties.
The ruling, issued Wednesday, was based on wording in the firefighters’ 1995 contract, which changed their pay agreement from an annual salary to an hourly wage.
District Judge G. Todd Baugh’s ruling says that because the wording was kept in later labor agreements, the city owes firefighters back pay from 1995 on. A group of 119 firefighters filed the class-action lawsuit five years ago.
