BUFFALO, N.Y. —A man was killed and two Buffalo firefighters were injured in a fire Friday evening inside a vacant home at 1364 Sycamore St. A dog in the building also perished.

Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield confirmed the death of the unidentified man, but his name was not released. When fire crews were called to the scene shortly after 8 p.m., the man was seen in a window of the smoke-filled building.

The injured firefighters were taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment of rib, back and shoulder injuries.

The fire was quickly contained on the second floor of the two-story building.

Damage was listed at $30,000 to the building and $2,000 to its contents.

Fire department officials late Friday were uncertain whether the injured firefighters would be released from the hospital after treatment or kept overnight.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
