A 10-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother are in the care of a relative after their mother left them at a Cy-Fair fire station Friday afternoon, authorities said.

A firefighter saw the woman drop the children off outside Station One in the 9200 block of Rodney Ray and brought them inside, said Karl Pflughaupt, a spokesman for the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department.

“She told her kids she can’t deal with them anymore and said don’t come home until you grow up,” Pflughaupt said.

Texas’ Baby Moses Law allows parents to leave an unharmed infant with a person at a fire station or hospital with no questions asked, but the law does not apply to children who are more than 60 days old.

He said the children were upset, but appeared to be in good health.

Harris County authorities were able to contact their mother, who returned to the fire station for questioning, Pflughaupt said. He could not say whether the woman will face any criminal charges.

Investigators will talk to the woman and her children separately in an effort to understand what happened, said CPS spokeswoman Gwen Carter.
