JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An NAACP leader wants the Justice Department to investigate an alleged culture of racism in the Jacksonville Fire-Rescue Department.
The Florida Times-Union reports that fire engineers Roderick Lewis and Rufus Smith are on administrative leave with pay. On Friday, the two reported that nooses were clipped to their coats at Fire Station Number Four.
NAACP president Isaiah Rumlin says he has met with Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton’s staff about firefighters’ concerns since December. Rumlin wants city officials to look into another firefighter’s claim that he was taunted with a noose in September.
