Spanish educator wants to teach fellow Latinos what she’s learned

HICKORY, N.C. — In 13 years, no one has died in a house fire in Hickory.

That almost changed a couple of years ago.

Firefighters arriving on the scene of a mobile home fire saw flames shooting out the windows and roof. The small home was full of smoke. Firefighters somehow made their way around inside the mobile home and found a Hispanic male barely breathing.

The home didn’t have a smoke detector, and firefighters had a difficult time communicating with the victim and concerned neighbors.

During the same month, Hickory firefighters responded to a serious wreck, involving a Hispanic driving and passengers. Rescue workers couldn’t communicate with the people to get information about their injuries or how the wreck happened
