A napping man was roused Thursday by firefighters alerting him that his house was on fire.

Omaha Fire Battalion Chief Brian Sorensen said the man initially thought it was a joke. Firefighters were able to get the man and his two dogs out. The man’s fiancee was not home.

Firefighters arrived at 2173 N. 125th Ave. Circle about 6:30 p.m. It took about 15 minutes to get the fire under control.

The house will be uninhabitable for some time, Sorensen said.

The fire started in a rear wall near the kitchen and was under investigation. A damage estimate was not available.

There was extensive smoke and water damage throughout the house, and firefighters had to knock a hole in the roof.

The American Red Cross helped find shelter for the couple.
