WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Mr Ivamy’s position, standing at the top of a fire engine snorkel against the background of a Sky billboard, put him in the line of fire of a fearsome forehand from the world’s top-ranked tennis player, Roger Federer. Mr Ivamy said he did not notice the bulky billboard as he guided a fire snorkel into place during a callout in Manners Mall, central Wellington, yesterday.
“I didn’t realise Roger was about to whack me in the head, but I’ll forgive him,” he said, adding that he occasionally enjoyed watching tennis.
Mr Ivamy and Federer had a day of contrasting fortunes yesterday – the firefighter did not face any danger, as smoke reported to be billowing from a chimney had stopped by the time the fire engine arrived.
