N.Y. firefighter charged in military pay scam

The Associated Press

NEW YORK — A New York City firefighter has been arrested on a charge of illegally collecting $6,500 in military leave pay and benefits.

The city’s Department of Investigation says the 30-year-old told his supervisors at the Fire Department that he had recently enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.

In February and March, the Fire Department gave the firefighter $6,500 in military leave pay and benefits.

Investigators say he had not, in fact, enlisted in the military.

The firefighter is charged with one count of felony grand larceny.

If convicted he faces a maximum seven years in prison.

Attorney information for the firefighter wasn’t immediately available.

A message left at a phone number listed under his name was not immediately returned.
