YONKERS, N.Y. — A New York firefighter died Tuesday about three months after being injured in training.

Antonio Rodrigues, 49, of the Yonkers Fire Department, was taken off life support at Westchester Medical Center Tuesday night.

“The City of Yonkers lost one of its bravest men with the untimely passing of Yonkers Firefighter Antonio Rodriques,” Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said.

“Antonio served with the Yonkers Fire Department, giving of himself to the residents of our City with unyielding passion, commitment and strength.

“We will forever remember Firefighter Rodriques, along with our other fallen uniformed officers, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family during this very difficult time.”

Spano’s office attributed Rodrigues’ death to complications from a “hemorrhagic stroke” he suffered last month. A fire department memo said Rodrigues had been hospitalized July 18 as a result of “injuries sustained on May 9, 2012, while on duty and conducting department training,” according to The Journal News.

A mayor’s spokeswoman said the department is recognizing the incident as a line-of-duty death.

Reports say his organs will be donated through the New York Organ Donor Network.
