ATOKA, Okla. — Two vehicles battling a grass fire collided head-on along a smoke-shrouded road in Atoka County, fatally injuring a 61-year-old firefighter.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the second vehicle was driven by the victim’s son.
Troopers identified the victim as John C. Myers of Pittsburg. Troopers say he died at the scene of yesterday’s collision due to massive injures.
The patrol says the collision occurred at 3:20 p.m. on a county road near Wesley about 13 miles east of U.S. 69 in Atoka County.
Troopers said Myers’ Wesley Fire Department vehicle was 1 of 2 pickup trucks that were fighting a grass fire along the road. The second was driven by Myers’ son, 31-year-old Juston Myers of Pittsburg.
Troopers said the two vehicles could not see each other due to heavy smoke and struck each other head-on.
