ONTARIO — A 61-year-old fire captain died Saturday of a heart attack shortly after responding to a call, FirefighterCloseCalls.com has reported.
George Egerton, Captain of volunteer department East Gwillimbury Emergency Services, and a 46-year veteran of the fire service, died in his home Saturday after returning from the scene of a traffic accident.
Captain Egerton was a professional firefighter for a Toronto department for 30 years, according to local media. When he and his wife, Gloria, retired to the Ontario area, he joined the volunteer service.
The incident is being regarded as a line-of-duty death by officials. Captain Egerton is survived by his wife and two daughters. Memorial services were held in Ontario on Tuesday and Wednesday.
