Dozens of new firefighters are reducing the Pittsburgh Fire Bureau’s high overtime costs.
Chief Michael Huss said 56 firefighters started last week after 18 weeks of EMS and firefighter training. That brings the total number of city firefighters to 555, still 165 short of the 720 firefighting jobs allotted in the city’s 2006 budget.
A new class of 39 recruits — the second class of 2006 — began 18 weeks of training Monday.
