R.I. firefighter dies during water rescue

TIVERTON, R.I. — Tiverton authorities have identified an experienced firefighter who died while searching for a missing boater.

Tiverton Fire Chief Robert Lloyd said Gerald Leduc, a 25-year veteran, died Sunday after running into some difficulty while diving in Stafford Pond.

The search began Sunday when emergency officials received calls from people on shore who heard a woman screaming for help. Rescue crews raced to the pond but were unable to locate the missing man.

Leduc apparently ran into trouble while diving for the man. He was taken from the scene in an ambulance.

Lloyd said he’s sad for Leduc’s family and planned to meet with them Monday.

Meanwhile, emergency officials have resumed their search of the pond for the missing man.
