NEDERLAND, Colo. — A woman has reported a new lead in the case of Geno, a St. Bernard that was lost when the home of a firefighter burned down in the Cold Springs fires.
Captain Charlie Schmidtmann was fighting the fire in Boulder County last week when he found his own home fully ablaze. He thought his two dogs, Clyde and Geno, who had been inside were likely gone.
Several hours later, his Labrador retriever, Clyde, ran out into the road in front of the fire truck that Schmidtmann was driving.
“I saw a tail walking through the woods and almost crashed the fire truck. I was so excited. It was Clyde,” Charlie Schmidtmann told ABC News 7.
However, Geno, the St. Bernard, is still missing.
On Sunday, a woman living in Four Mile Canyon said she saw a large, wet, St Bernard on her deck last Friday. “He had a collar on and when she went to reach for it to check his tags, he shied away from her,” according to the Finding Geno Facebook page. “Additional pictures were texted to her and she felt very certain that the dog she saw was in fact Geno.”
The Facebook group has created a Google map of the area that includes places where people have searched for Geno. They are asking others to help in the search and put up posters.
“Team Geno! There was a sighting of a St. Bernard matching Geno’s description in Coal Creek Canyon near Camp Eden at about 9:30am today,” said the group’s latest post on Wednesday. “Please keep your eyes open. If seen, DO NOT APPROACH, FOLLOW, CALL FOR HIM OR WHISTLE as this may startle him and make him bolt.”
