ATHENS, Texas — Sketches of three “people of interest” in the string of East Texas church fires were released by federal authorities Friday.

The three are not being called suspects. “We just want to identify, locate and interview them,” said Tom Crowley, public information officer for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Authorities are offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of people in the case. A church insurance group is offering a separate reward of up to $30,000 in two of the cases.

The rash of fires started New Year’s Day at a church in Athens and has damaged or destroyed nine churches of various denominations in Henderson, Smith and Van Zandt counties. Another church fire in Temple was also set deliberately but is not linked to the East Texas fires.
