Third-generation Cambridge, Minn., firefighter retires

In the new Cambridge Fire Station, the individual equipment lockers are laid out by seniority, with the rookies at the left and the veterans at the right. On that far right side is Paul Nordberg’s space, housing the gear of the 26-year “old-timer” who will be retiring this month.

Nordberg followed in the fire fighting footsteps of his father, Wayne Nordberg, and grandfather, Eric Nordberg. Cambridge Mayor Marlys Palmer estimated there has been a Nordberg on the Cambridge Fire Department the past 83 years.

“Essentially, Cambridge is a small town. When you grew up in a small town, all the dads and moms were involved in a lot of things. That’s the way it was,” began Nordberg as he took a break from one of his electrician jobs on Feb. 6. “And so when you grow up, you don’t think much about stepping in, you just see it as being ‘your turn.’ There’s no pressure, there’s no influence — it’s just what you do.”
