HOUSTON — A panicked neighbor roused Shoneka Singleton from her sleep early today, but she only had time to scoop up her baby before escaping the swift-moving flames that destroyed more than a dozen apartments at a southwest Houston complex.
“I just ran out of there — me and my newborn baby,” said Singleton, a resident of the The Carlisle Apartments, in the 9800 block of Forum Parkway.
More than 100 firefighters were needed to quell the three-alarm blaze, which broke out around 6:30 a.m and extinguished an hour later. The fire may have started by a faulty heating unit although an investigation to determine the exact cause remains ongoing, said Houston Fire Chief J.C. Seamans.
