The Charlotte Observer

GASTONIA, N.C. — Two volunteer firefighters were treated at a hospital Friday afternoon for second degree burns they received when a grass fire near Gastonia came into contact with a natural gas leak.

It was the last in a series of events that brought rescue officials to the intersection of Beaty Ford and Valleydale roads about 12:30 p.m., said Lloyd Moskowitz, director of Gaston County communications.

The firefighters, with the New Hope Volunteer Fire Department, suffered burns on their necks and head, volunteer firefighter Jeff Young said. By Friday evening the two had been released from Gaston Memorial Hospital, he said.
