WASHINGTON — A Metro subway train and an underground station were evacuated Sunday after two loud noises were reported, and an electrical fire was discovered in the undercarriage of one car, transit system officials said.
No injuries were reported at the Waterfront station on the Green Line in Southwest Washington.
The six-car train was traveling through a tunnel toward the station when a Metro employee reported the noises.
Officials estimated that 30 to 70 passengers were in the station when it was evacuated.
“As good luck would have it, we had a shuttle bus already there at the station,” Metro spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said.
Firefighters put out the flames, and the station was reopened about 2 1/2 hours after the morning evacuation.
The fire appeared to have started in the motor of one of Metro’s newest cars, which went into service within the past few months.
