JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — A state police fire marshal will try to figure out what caused a fire that destroyed a tire shop and a neighboring business in southwestern Pennsylvania.
The fire was at Carmen’s Wholesale Tires in Stonycreek Township, near Johnstown. The fire started about 4 a.m. Sunday and spread to a business that sells plants next door.
Firefighters from 22 companies were still dousing hot spots on Sunday night and say water problems caused by single-digit temperatures hampered their efforts to fight the stubborn fire fed by about 20,000 tires.
Three nearby homes were evacuated, but firefighters kept the flames from spreading to them. Nobody was injured, but one firefighter had to be rescued when he fell through a roof.
