ST. CROIX, Virgin Islands — A firefighter died Jan. 24 after suffering a heart attack while responding to a fire.
Virgin Islands Consortium reported that fire engineer Dwayne “Yogi” Thomas, a 22-year veteran of the V.I. Fire Service, drove a fire truck and crew to the scene of a structure fire, but his colleagues said he became unresponsive when they arrived.
Officials said firefighters performed CPR on Thomas until EMS arrived, but he died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
Virgin Islands Governor Kenneth Mapp ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff until Feb. 7 to honor Thomas “for outstanding dedication to the fire department, his fellow firefighters and the territory.”
