Harris Corporation’s BeOn Application Brings Broadband Communications to Any Land Mobile Radio System

MELBOURNE, FL/MINNEAPOLIS, MN, (APCO Booth #713) — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has announced that its BeOn® application solution now delivers the robust Project 25 (P25) feature set for push-to-talk (PTT) voice communications over today’s commercial cellular network, including Long Term Evolution (LTE), networks.
BeOn enables Land Mobile Radio (LMR) users to extend the voice capability of their networks and positions them for the eventual integration with the planned nationwide 700 MHz LTE communications network. BeOn bridges narrowband PTT services by operating on devices for broadband networks including 3G and 4G commercial cellular networks, public safety LTE networks and WiFi networks.
“With BeOn, first responders on LMR systems gain the benefits of real-time LTE voice and broadband data, empowering them to use that information for effective communication, response and situational awareness,” said Steve Marschilok, president, Harris Public Safety and Professional Communications. “BeOn is a powerful application for public safety users such as supervisors, administrative personnel, and others who don’t always carry a traditional LMR radio.”
BeOn is now a standard component of all new Harris LMR systems, and extends the utility of P25, OpenSky2™ and EDACS® radio systems by matching their effective coverage area to that of the existing broadband network. Users can access the functionality of their agency’s LMR system at any location that provides broadband data coverage through the BeOn application on a cellular device. BeOn is an ideal solution for users who need to remain inconspicuous, such as undercover law enforcement teams. With BeOn, chiefs and commanders can maintain radio access without carrying full size radios. BeOn is also an ideal option for system users who don’t require rugged land mobile radios, such as animal control staff, parks and recreation employees, utility and transit personnel.
BeOn is the only broadband application built from the ground up to support the P25 LMR feature set, and is commercially available for desktop PCs through a Windows client, as well as for Android™ devices such as cell phones and tablets computers including the Harris Insight BTC-100. BeOn leverages the P25 codec and provides advanced P25 radio system features such as emergency call support, 256-bit AES encryption, OTAR, caller ID, talkgroup scanning and more, and will offer situational awareness capabilities in the future.
Harris will provide live demonstrations of this and other technology in its booth (#713) at the APCO International 78th Annual Conference & Expo, August 19-22, 2012 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
