ST. GEORGE, Utah — Fire academy trainees learned about how to use technology to make their job easier.

Associated Press reported that more than 700 Utah Fire and Rescue Academy Winter Fire School trainees learned at an event how to use three-dimensional map projections that act as holograms to simulate the spreading of fires, traffic obstacles or an unsuspected gas leak.

“We can input pretty much anything, and we get a working model of what’s likely to happen next,” Wildland Program Manager Dan Cather said. “We can set up hypothetical situations, simulate incidents and really be prepared for different changes in conditions.”

About 130 instructors from around the area participated in the two-day event and also taught firefighters things like how to investigate a fire scene and driver’s safety.
