GASTONIA, N.C. — Recruits for the Gastonia Fire Department participated in physical training and testing in the extreme heat Thursday, struggling with vests weighing 50 pounds and a 170-pound dummy.
Of the 16 recruits who started the course, five were unable to finish it.
Recruit William Wilson was exhausted as he wrapped up, rushing over to a cool-down center with fans, cold water and a waiting medic.
