“Anyone can act brave, but only a few will act on their bravery and protect,” the Espanola Police Department said, according to the Epoch Times. “His immediate reaction was to protect. Great job, firefighter Trujillo.”

Trujillo said it was his instinct to help the woman, according to KRQE.

“I saw two people fighting and by then a crowd started to form outside.”

The firefighter said things escalated quickly from there.

“I saw a kid walking from the back of a vehicle and he loaded a gun,” he said. “We heard gunshots go off. She ran back in the store in front of me and my first instinct was just to cover her. I didn’t have time to react or think about anything else.”

Another video posted by the police department shows an unidentified person also acting as a human shield by protecting two children and a woman.

“Watch as this unidentified man takes two children in his arms and shields them with his body as shots were fired in their direction,” the Facebook post said. “As he went to the ground, he also positioned his body over a woman who was already lying down. Without hesitation, this man protected three lives. Thank you, sir for your bravery.”

No one was injured in the shooting. The incident is currently under investigation.
