BOSTON — Five firefighters were injured yesterday and at least six people were displaced after a four-alarm blaze tore through a Jamaica Plain rooming house, causing about $500,000 worth of damage.

The inferno erupted at about 10:18 a.m. at a two-and-a-half-story rooming house at 133 South St., said Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald.

“It was a very dramatic fire on arrival,” said MacDonald. “There was heavy fire.”

One firefighter suffered burns to his hands and another burns on his neck, MacDonald said.

He added another firefighter was treated for a back injury. Two more jakes sought treatment for a dislocated finger and a cut to the hand, respectively, MacDonald said.

One resident suffered smoke inhalation, MacDonald said.

Authorities believe the fire began on the second floor of the home, but the cause is still under investigation, MacDonald said.
