Detroit firefighters on way to chemical spill hurt in crash

DETROIT - A fire truck on the way to a chemical spill overturned as the driver tried to avoid hitting a motorist, injuring all four firefighters aboard, an official says.

The accident happened about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, said Detroit Fire Department spokeswoman Capt. Katrina Butler. She said a vehicle pulled out in front of the ladder truck, and the truck’s driver made a sharp turn that caused the rig to flip and land on a parked car.

Police told the Detroit Free Press that the woman in the vehicle is deaf and did not hear the sirens.

“Thank God everyone is all right,” said Dan McNamara, president of the Detroit Fire Fighters Association. “It’s miraculous that they were able to miss the woman involved.”

The four injured firefighters were treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital and released, Butler told The Detroit News.
