DUBAI — Four labourers lost their lives while over sixty others were injured, five critically, when a horrific fire trapped them atop the 34-storey Fortune Tower under construction on Shaikh Zayed Road in downtown Dubai yesterday afternoon.
According to survivors and eyewitnesses, the first shock waves hit the construction workers and labourers on the Fortune Towers, when they saw columns of thick, dark, smoke rapidly curling up the building and the scorching heat began to affect the various floors and ceilings.
Most of those trapped in the building under construction, according to sources, were located on the top floors, between the 31st and 34th floors. The police and Civil Defence teams, along with various paramedic units and special police helicopter rescue squads, reached the site of the fire incident within minutes of being alerted.
