PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A driver has hit a natural-gas line at a Rhode Island apartment building, setting off an explosion that’s injured six firefighters and a police officer.

Providence Fire Department Deputy Chief James Mirza tells The Providence Journal one firefighter and the officer are hospitalized.

Mirza says the driver ruptured the gas line in the accident early Saturday. He says the gas built up in a room that houses the apartment building’s heating and electrical equipment and then ignited in the confined space.

The fire department hasn’t released the name of the driver or the driver’s condition.
