PIEDMONT, N.C. — A new proposal to relax the requirements for sprinklers in some public buildings is being met with criticism and concern by firefighters and the N.C. Fire Marshalls Association.
The current law, which was enacted in December 2006, requires sprinklers in school cafeterias, bars and restaurants that hold more than 100 people. The proposed change would increase that number to 300, effectively reducing the number of buildings that would require sprinklers.
“It’s a no-brainer. When you have 299 students in a cafeteria and a fire develops, look at your risks. It’s tremendous,” said Forsyth County Fire Chief Rick Plunkett, who opposes the plan.
