PHILADELPHIA — Odell Joseph “Odie” Pommells Jr., 33, of West Oak Lane, a Philadelphia firefighter, died Saturday, Aug. 28, when the 2002 Suzuki motorcycle he was riding struck a car in West Philadelphia.
A seven-year Fire Department veteran, Mr. Pommells was assigned to Engine 5 at 43d and Market Streets in West Philadelphia. His father, Odell Pommells Sr., is a retired Philadelphia firefighter.
Mr. Pommells grew up in North Philadelphia and graduated from Central High School. He had nearly completed his studies at Temple University, his family said, when he received “the call of duty” to follow in his father’s footsteps.
He would give you the shirt off his back or the last dollar in his pocket, his family said, and he was an attentive and loving father to his two daughters.
Mr. Pommells had been a motorcycle enthusiast for three years and was a member of the Deep Impact Bike Club, his wife, Latrisse, said. He loved to cook and was an expert grillmaster, she said, and he barbecued outside all winter.
In addition to his wife and father, Mr. Pommells is survived by his mother, Deborah; daughters Shalynn and Nastasja; a brother; and a sister.
A memorial service will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at Park Avenue Banquet Hall, 4942 Parkside Ave.
