CLINTON, Utah — Officials say one sleeping couple is lucky a neighbor noticed a spreading fire from a garage and called 911 Sunday morning.

The two people were asleep in the basement when a neighbor walking to church around 8:45 a.m. noticed the flames spreading from the garage at 2646 W. 800 North and called for help.

Clinton fire crews arrived on the scene just four minutes later and were able to evacuate the house.

The flames were doused within minutes and the fire didn’t spread beyond the garage, said Clinton Fire Chief Floyd Petersen.

Officials estimate the fire caused at least $50,000 in damage, but Petersen said the couple is lucky.

“Most of the smoke was in the upper level of the home, and they were sleeping in the basement,” he said.

“It’s amazing they slept through all that commotion. They’re very fortunate.”
