TUCSON, Ariz. — A large van rolled on an Arizona interstate and five occupants were killed. Twelve others were airlifted to hospitals with injuries.
Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Officer Robert Bailey said the van’s driver lost control of the vehicle Wednesday afternoon on westbound Interstate 10. It rolled down an embankment and landed on the eastbound side of the highway about 50 miles east of Tucson.
Ken Briggs, executive director of the International Rescue Committee’s Tucson office, said the van carried refugees from Burundi who had been relocated to Tucson.
They were seeking work at Eurofresh, Inc., a hydroponics vegetable grower in Willcox.
Briggs said the Burundians had been living in Tucson for a few years.
