SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A veteran firefighter died of brain cancer, fire department officials announced Thursday.

The South Bend Tribune reported that South Bend Fire Department firefighter-EMT Joshua Comeau, a 12-year veteran of the department, lost his battle to brain cancer after being diagnosed in 2014.

According to a Facebook post from the South Bend Fire Department, Comeau, 41, underwent surgery for the cancer and returned to work. His cancer returned in 2018 and he was limited to office duties.

"Josh was a strong firefighter physically, mentally and spiritually," Fire Chief Steve Cox said. "Josh's attitude and faith never faltered even in the toughest of times."
