MAHAFFEY, Pa. — A 15-year-old junior firefighter who died in a freak accident was memorialized Sunday.
The Progress News reported that Thane “Bobby” Lucas was killed Feb. 28 while burning trash; something inside one of the bags exploded, striking him in the neck. Lucas was approaching his one-year anniversary with the Community Volunteer Fire Department at the time of his death.
“Without people like Bobby, there would be no protection for the things in life we treasure the most,” Commander John DeLaney, who conducted the ceremony, said.
DeLaney presented a plaque to Lucas’ parents, saying he made “the ultimate sacrifice while in service to the citizens of Pennsylvania.”
