MACON, Ga. — The Macon- Bibb County Fire Department appointed a new deputy chief in a ceremony held on Wednesday.
Ronald Smith, Jr. was appointed the new position by Fire Chief Shane Edwards and pinned by his wife at the ceremony.
“I think it should be known that Ron Smith’s grandfather, Chief Wendell Harvey, was the one who sat with me 35 years ago and was telling me y’all would be the future leaders,” said Edwards. “He was a chief here back then and he was truly making a difference here in this organization. And just to see Chief Smith follow in those footsteps, becoming a young leader, a young chief — that right there speaks volumes about this family, about the commitment and dedication that this family has to the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department .”
Smith, a native of Macon, graduated from Windsor Academy in 2002. He became a third-generation firefighter for the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department on Nov. 3, 2003.
As deputy chief, Smith will oversee the numerous administrative divisions in the department, including fire prevention, training, fleet management, arson investigation and special operations, according to officials.
“We’re thankful for Chief Smith’s commitment and dedication to the department and our community, and we’re all looking forward to his leadership,” said Edwards.
Smith is a 20-year veteran of the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department. He earned a bachelor’s degree in fire and emergency services administration and a master’s degree in public administration. His certifications and professional affiliations include, but are not limited to, Georgia Fire Chief Designation, Fire Officer Level 4, Instructor 2, Fire Inspector 1, Plans Examiner 1, Fire Safety Educator 1, EMT-I, and EMS Instructor.
Smith is also a member of the Georgia Search and Rescue Team, commander of the Department’s Honor Guard Team, and a district vice president for the Georgia Firefighters Association.
Smith said the fire department is the heartbeat of the community because it is involved at every level, from responding to fires, to inspecting buildings for safety, to education, to parades, and more.
“I’m just thankful to have the opportunity to see this department grow into what it has the potential to be,” said Smith. “I’m just proud to be part of something that helps my community in such an amazing way.”
