BOLINGBROKE, Ga. — Monroe County firefighters responded to a house fire in Bolingbroke on Friday. To one firefighter’s horror, it was his home, and his 12-year-old son was inside.
The on-duty firefighter, Deane Comer, helped alongside the other responding firefighters to extinguish the blaze and save his son, Monroe County Emergency Services said in a Facebook post.
His son was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and was taken to Navicent Hospital in Macon, the post said. The child was later transferred to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta for further smoke inhalation treatment.
Comer’s home is considered a total loss, the post said. The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
The post said, “MCES is working closely with the insurance company and Red Cross, and they are doing a great job. The family has a place to stay for now.”
Firefighters will be at Station #4 in Bolingbroke on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to collect Visa gift cards and Walmart gift cards, so Comer and his family can purchase clothes and necessities they lost in the fire, the post said.
“Your continued thoughts and prayers for our firefighter and his family are appreciated, as well as for his son, as he recovers,” the post said.
