Off-duty firefighter helps neighbors escape house fire

The firefighter, who suffered a minor injury, woke up the residents

GENEVA, Ill. — An off-duty firefighter was in the right place at the right time when he helped three people escape from a house fire Sunday.

Daily Herald reported that a neighbor returning from work spotted the fire and called 911; an off-duty firefighter woke up the residents. Crews with the St. Charles Fire Department arrived to find one house in flames; the blaze was extending to a neighboring home.

No residents were injured. The off-duty firefighter suffered a minor injury; the blaze caused an estimated $100,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
