All three men were ‘heavily sedated, wrapped up, swollen’

PEOSTA, Iowa — The three men injured in Tuesday’s house explosion in Peosta, Iowa, are in critical but stable condition at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Brad Mahoney, 18, of Dyersville, and brothers Adam Conrad, 28, and Scott Conrad, 24, both of Delhi, were burned in the explosion.

A ball of fire erupted from the basement of a rural Peosta home Tuesday, severely burning Mahoney and the Conrads, who were inside, putting a new floor in the basement to repair water damage from recent storms.

Randy Mahoney, Brad’s father, said his son had his shirt on and suffered third-degree burns on more than 50 percent of his body. The Conrads were not wearing shirts. Scott suffered burns on more than 60 percent of his body and Adam, 70 percent.

“It’s going to be a long haul,” Randy said. “They’re all heavily sedated, wrapped up, swollen.”

By Saturday, all three men had shown signs of improvement, and Mahoney and Adam Conrad had had their first skin graft surgeries.
