GRISWOLD, Conn. Authorities say a Connecticut driver lost control of a car and crashed into a tree, killing four teenagers and leaving another in critical condition.

State Police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance says three of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash Tuesday afternoon in Griswold, about 40 miles southeast of Hartford.

Police are not releasing the victims’ names until their families are notified. Administrators for the local school district did not return messages left late Tuesday.

Vance says investigators are trying to determine whether speed, alcohol or distracted driving were factors in the crash, as is typically done in motor vehicle accidents.

The crash comes a day after state officials held a news conference to highlight new requirements for teen drivers that they say improve safety, such as increased training.
