AMHERST, N.Y. — A NY assistant fire chief received minor injuries after colliding head on with a wrong-way driver early Wednesday morning.
Assistant Chief Chris Kaplewicz was responding to call when he was hit by Sandra Metzler, 61, who was heading north in a southbound highway lane, reportedly without her headlights on, according to WIVB.
Getzville Fire Chief Bob Zacher said that Asst. Chief Kaplewicz is also a nurse and was the number one responder in Getzville last year, responding to 600 calls as a volunteer.
Asst. Chief Kaplewicz is expected to be fine after being released from the hospital with just some soreness. Metzler was to have surgery later Wednesday morning.
Investigators are looking into why Metzler was going the wrong way down the highway.
