A major shift in firefighter protection is underway. NFPA 1850 – the new consolidated standard for the selection, care and maintenance of structural firefighting turnout gear and self-contained breathing apparatus – brings NFPA 1851 and NFPA 1852 together for the first time. This integration creates a single, unified roadmap for managing PPE and reinforces a cultural shift toward reducing contamination and safeguarding long-term firefighter health.

NFPA 1850 is more than an administrative update. The standard reshapes how departments oversee PPE programs, establishes consistent terminology and introduces changes that affect daily operations, long-term planning and departmental accountability.

Why now is the time to prepare

NFPA 1850 became effective in September 2025 and implementation timelines vary across its components. Departments will need to train personnel, reassess PPE programs and ensure service partners meet the strengthened verification requirements. For many organizations, this will require new planning, budgeting and workflow adjustments.

NFPA 1850 represents one of the most significant PPE management updates in decades. For leaders charged with firefighter safety, understanding these changes – and what they mean for policy, operations and long-term health – is critical.
