Off-duty firefighters save woman having heart attack

“She fell in the right place. If they weren’t standing right there, she wouldn’t be here today,” firefighter Michael Schifone said

STOUGHTON, Mass. — The first round of a boxing match had just ended when Paul McCafferty noticed the woman in front of him slumping in her seat.

She had no pulse and was barely breathing, leftover muscle energy pumping her lungs sporadically. Several more minutes and the lack of oxygen would have taken a serious toll.

But she could not have picked a better place to have a heart attack. McCafferty and several friends — fellow off-duty firefighters from Stoughton — were at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton on Saturday watching their friend Gerald Schifone fight in his fourth professional boxing match. They were standing directly behind the woman, who was sitting with her partner.
